The best hip-hop writing from last week

NEPTUNES

Its been another good week for qualify hip-hop journalism and long-form articles. Here’s our top picks from the last seven days:

Origin Stories: The Neptunes by Chris Williams

Read in full here. If you also haven’t yet seen the incredible Revolutions On Air: The Golden Era of New York Radio 1980-1988 documentary, watch it here.

Gettin Kinda Hectic: Snap and Chill Rob G’s Epic Power Struggle by Robbie Ettelson

Robbie Ettelson is one of the best writers documenting the history of hip-hop, and here breaks down the troublesome making of monster dance hit Power, which included vocals from Chill Rob G. It appears on the always brilliant Cuepoint, and you can read it in full here.

Mac Miller – ‘Boo’

MAC MILLERSay what you want about Mac Miller, but the boy can rap, and his flow is incredible on new release Boo. No word on what project this might be from, but it bodes well for the next MM album, which will be the official follow-up to the brilliant Watching Movies with the Sound Off from 2013. Listen below.

William Cooper – ‘Morpheus Prophecie’ feat. Planet Asia

IMG_5078-0William Cooper and Planet Asia get on some Matrix shit with new single Morpheus Prophecies. Lets be honest, its about 15 years too late to do a Matrix joint, even if elements of the basic concept can be applied to what’s happening in the world today. Its also been done to death, but the music is still banging enough to deserve respect. Its from William Cooper’s God’s Will album, and you can hear it below.

Check out previous singles Holy Mountain featuring Sean Price, and True-n-Livin Nightmares featuring Sticky Fingaz.

DJ Premier goes sightseeing in Moscow

MOSCOWDJ Premier recently took time out from the PRhyme tour to go exploring Moscow, but what we like most about the video is how humble Primo still is that hip-hop has enabled him to even go to a place like Russia. Its also good to hear him talk about Gang Starr family like Jeru The Damaja and Group Home, once again suggesting that bridges have been rebuilt. We are itching for more on the hinted Primo/Jeru reunion, so hopefully that finally happens soon.
