eMC – ‘The Tonite Show’ trailer
With so much talent involved, it was no surprise when 2008’s The Show album from eMC turned out to be a certified classic. If you didn’t know, eMC is the hip-hop super-group formed of the legendary Masta Ace, plus Wordsworth, Punchline and Stricklin. New album The Tonite Show drops in May, and with guest spots from Sadat X and beats by Diamond D, its looking like it could be another winner. Watch the official announcement video below.
Magnum Opus – Rock the Bells
The Magnum Opus series from Complex is back, and considering the last episode covered a 50 Cent song, they are now right back to the proper classics. This time its the story of Rock the Bells from LL Cool J, giving us a great insight into one of the best tracks of all time, including the battle for a certain sample we all know and love.
Jeru the Damaja – Just One Record
During his travels touring through France, Jeru the Damaja recently contributed to online series Just One Record, where an artist breaks down their favorite album. Jeru picks an absolute hip-hop classic, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. Towards the end, he also breaks down the producers he’s currently working with. No mention of that reunion with DJ Premier, but hopefully Primo is one of the artists he says he can’t reveal yet.

The Straight Outta Compton trailer actually looks pretty good
Hood films can be hard to do well. Remember the string of movies that came out back in the 90s, after Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society blew up? There were lots of imitators, but most weren’t great. We were therefore understandably skeptical about the long-awaited NWA flick, but judging from the trailer and the slick intro from Dr Dre and Ice Cube, it might actually be half decent. Think New Jersey Drive, rather than Jason’s Lyric. Peep the trailer below, and make sure you go watch it when it hits cinemas later this year.
Random YouTube man puts pictures to Dilla’s classic Donuts
Hip-hop music videos just ain’t what they used to be, and they weren’t that great even when they were. They still have a place though, but what do you do when you want to put pictures to a work that never had videos, years after the fact?
If you are video maker Houston Loves J Dilla, you make your own video by stitching together hours of random footage. But when the music you are working with happens to be J Dilla’s Donuts, one of the most revered albums in hip-hop, you have to tread carefully. Thankfully, the boy has done good.
Coming off more like a short film, the clip illustrates the entire 43 minutes of the Donuts album, gifting us a respectful and skilful pastiche of an absolute classic. Watch below for yourself and let us know what you think.
Watch DJ Nu-Mark on the latest Rhythm Roulette
Mass Appeal have steady been bringing us new episodes of Rhythm Roulette in recent weeks, and they reserved the final episode of 2014 for Jurassic 5 producer DJ Nu-Mark. Known for having a huge vinyl collection of his own, it wasn’t too much of a surprise to hear that he was already familiar with some of the records he picked out at random.
After a quick listen to all three pieces of vinyl, Nu-Mark gets to work, and its not long before he has crafted a nice little beat. It helps of course when you happen to have a sick studio at your disposal, with Nu-Mark making full use of everything from Maschine to his Serato set-up. The result is dope, and you can hear it below.
DJ Nu-Mark’s latest album with Slimkid3 is out now.
