Mass Appeal by Gang Starr is right up there in our top 3 favorite hip-hop songs of all time, possibly at number 1. It sent a tingle down our spine then to hear that the latest episode of the often-incredible Magnum Opus series from Complex is dedicated to the track. We get to hear from DJ Premier hinself, plus a host of others from his inner circle, each helping to paint a picture of how the classic joint got made, and its impact since. Shame we’ll never get to hear stories from the much-missed Guru. Watch below right now.
First Division – ‘This Iz The Time’
Canada’s First Division have their debut album Overworked & Underpaid coming soon, and they’ve bagged themselves a beat by the one and only DJ Premier. It may be one of those Primo-by-numbers joints, but it still sounds dope. Listen below, and look out for that album when it drops.
The Addicts – ‘Embedded’
The Addicts is a group out of Florida new on our radar, but with classic boom bap joints for days. Already being championed by DJ Premier and others, we look forward to hearing more from crew members Menace and Bliz when their This Is For Us album drops in August. DJ Premier goes sightseeing in Moscow
DJ Premier recently took time out from the PRhyme tour to go exploring Moscow, but what we like most about the video is how humble Primo still is that hip-hop has enabled him to even go to a place like Russia. Its also good to hear him talk about Gang Starr family like Jeru The Damaja and Group Home, once again suggesting that bridges have been rebuilt. We are itching for more on the hinted Primo/Jeru reunion, so hopefully that finally happens soon.
